Robert Kennedy and his aide, Peter Edelman (in glasses behind Kennedy) visited several homes in Cleveland and found “awfully bare cupboards.” Credit: Dan Guravich.

Just outside, in front of the television cameras, Kennedy’s thoughts turned to the future awaiting little David and Lorenzo White and others like them. “We could be doing more for those who are poor, and particularly for our children, who had nothing to do with asking to be born into this world, no school to go to, insufficient clothes so that they are going to lead a very difficult, unhappy life through the rest of their existence. This is a reflection on our society, on all of us,” he said.

Not everyone saw it that way. As he toured the East Side, Kennedy encountered a vocal member of the city’s white civic leadership. Taking a pugnacious stance in front of Kennedy, local newspaper owner and editor Clifford Langford asked the senators just why they selected Mississippi to start their tour of impoverished America.

“Senator, just what do you think you’re doing down here?” Langford asked with an edge in his voice.
